Wales has established itself as one of the best mountain bike destinations in Europe. From scenic natural trails and flowing single track to purpose-built bike parks and downhill tracks, it really does have something for all. To help you find out more about what’s on offer, GMTBIKING has picked out 7 of the best mountain bike spots to discover in South Wales. We have chosen a variety of scenic natural trails, which you can ride with most bikes – gravel bikes, cross country, full suspension, followed by our selection of bike trail centres.
The most scenic coastal trail in the country
The Gower Peninsula and Swansea Bay
Famous for its wonderful white sandy beaches and a clear blue sea, the Gower Peninsula is the perfect place to start mountain biking in natural trails. Gower has a great network of bridleways, offering a variety of dirt roads and single tracks ideal for gravel and cross-country bikes. Some of the steep rocky descents won’t disappoint riders on full suspensions.
Swansea or Abertawe in Welsh, lies within the historic county boundaries of Glamorgan and the ancient Welsh commote of Gŵyr. If this sounds like lord of the rings language, it is because some of Tolkien’s invented languages are Welsh based. The landscape is also very Tolkien. The trails can be challenging. If you are into enduro, then this is for you.
GMTBIKING offers tours and holiday breaks in the Gower and Swansea Bay
Valleys and mountains
Such an iconic name, but often confused with the Black Mountains. The Black Mountain forms the western high ground of the Brecon Beacons National Park. This mountain feels more remote and is way less busy than its eastern sister - the Black Mountains. Riding in this western side of Brecon is superb with its rocky descents leading to breath-taking valleys.
GMTBIKING offers guided rides during the drier months to the unique Black Mountain.
The Brecon Beacons National Park include South Wales' highest mountain - Pen y Fan. To the east you can ride on the Black Mountains to the west you can ride on the similarly named but quite distinct Black Mountain. Wherever you go there is plenty of natural bike trails to keep everyone entertained.
